Actually Graduated Permits are a new idea but they are proving to be a great tool for the education of new drivers’. Graduated Drivers licenses are simple to understand. Your first license has a great deal of restrictions. When you are 15 years of age you can obtain an instruction permit or as it is more commonly called a learners permit. With this permit the driver has to first enroll and complete an approved driver’s education class. Next, satisfy a minimum of 50 driving hours, 10 of which has to be at night, with a parent or adult. The new student driver cannot get any driving convictions during this period.
The next stage is called the initial licensing phase. This is when the student driver puts their new found skills into action. This license does have a variety of restrictions placed on it to keep the teenager safe. The first is a night time curfew on driving. Between 10:00 – 11:00 PM the beginning driver must stay off the roads. The next few restrictions have to do with passengers, their ages, and limits. There is also a ceiling as to how many moving violations and/or convictions the driver can incur.
The final stage is the full license. Finally all of the limits put in place to keep the driver safe are removed. Although they still must exercise good judgment to keep safe while driving. It is also a great idea to equip your teen with the knowledge of defensive driving by taking an online course. Does graduated licensing work in state like Illinois where this is law? Well yes; a stud by AAA on traffic safety estimates that 38% fatal accidents could be reduced.
