The idea of the Ford MyKey was born out of parents concerns on how to control the dangerous driving habits that teenagers often engage in. So the minds at Ford Motor Company came up with this ingenious technology that piggybacks on the existing anti-theft systems.
What the MyKey will allow parents to do is set certain limits and safety feature to keep their rookie teenage drivers in check. We know that the #1 killer of teenagers is the auto accident. And the #1 cause of car crashes in young people is speeding. Well with the Ford MyKey; a speed limit can be set. So when you give you teen the Ford MyKey which is the same as a regular key except with a computer chip; the car will recognize the driver and engage some preprogrammed features. The first feature is a speed limiter. Parents will soon be able to limit the top speed of the car. So most likely 80mph will be the fastest your teen could ever drive. Another useful feature targeted at keeping the young driver safe is a volume control. With a volume limit set, your child will hopefully be less distracted. Finally the most useful and necessary feature will be a seat belt chime to remind the driver to wear their seat belt!
Now the feeling is that since this could possibly work so well for teenagers; what other areas can this be applied to. Well Ford has recently released a statement saying that Fleet and Commercial Truck owners will have to same kind of technology available to them. The NHTSA states that the average crash can cost an employer $16,500. And if there is an injury this amount can skyrocket.
So with this new technology, hopefully we will see safer roads ahead! Couple that with thorough Defensive Driver training and the roads of the future will be safely traveled!
